Wool trade

Wool trade

Frome was founded on wool. The town is within trading distance of the sheep rearing areas of the Mendips, the Cotswolds and Salisbury Plain. It became the market town for the area around it and developed in Medieval times as an important centre for the processing of wool and then cloth making. From the 15th century the town’s prosperity rose as the trade developed and continued until competition from the steam-driven factories of the North finally caused it to fade.
